PMU Aftercare: Your First Two Weeks

You have just had your permanent makeup done. It looks bold, crisp and a little darker than you expected. This is completely normal. What happens over the next two weeks now matters most.

Good aftercare protects your investment. It keeps the colour even, the shape clean and the skin healthy. This guide walks you through the healing journey, day by day. For the bigger picture, start with our complete guide to permanent makeup.

Why aftercare matters so much

Permanent makeup is a wound as well as a work of art. The skin needs to heal cleanly for the pigment to settle well. Rush it, and the colour can patch or fade.

Healthy skin holds pigment better. So aftercare is really skin care. For trusted general guidance on caring for healing skin, the American Academy of Dermatology is a reliable resource.

Days 1 to 3: keep it calm

The first days are the most active. Your skin may feel tender and look darker. A little swelling is normal, especially with eyeliner.

Do

  • Gently blot the area as your artist showed you.
  • Wash your hands before touching the treated skin.
  • Apply only the aftercare balm you were given, sparingly.

Avoid

  • Makeup over the treated area.
  • Sweat, steam and hot showers on the face.
  • Touching or rubbing out of habit.

Days 4 to 7: the flaking stage

Now the skin begins to flake. This is the part clients worry about most. Try not to.

Light flaking is healthy. The colour underneath may look patchy for a few days. It evens out as the skin settles, so be patient and leave it alone.

Never pick or scratch. Pulling a flake early can lift pigment with it. Let every piece fall away on its own.

Days 8 to 14: the soft return

By the second week, the surface looks calmer. The colour often appears too light now. This is the “ghosting” stage, and it is temporary.

Over the following weeks, the colour gently resurfaces. Your true result appears around four to six weeks after treatment. A perfecting session then refines anything that needs it.

The golden rules

  • Keep it clean and dry as directed by your artist.
  • No sun, saunas or swimming while healing.
  • Never pick the flakes, however tempting.
  • Use only approved products on the area.
  • Wear SPF daily once healed to protect the colour.

When to call your artist

Healing is usually smooth and simple. Still, trust your instincts. Contact your artist if you notice spreading redness, heat or anything that worries you.
